Ewel Postdoctoral Fellowship
The Ewel Fellowship partners up-and-coming researchers and UF faculty members in dynamic pursuit of new breakthroughs in ecology and the environmental sciences.
The John J. and Katherine C. Ewel Postdoctoral Fellowship in Ecology and Environmental Science in the Tropics and Subtropics enables a recent doctoral degree recipient to pursue research at the University of Florida.
Ewel Fellows conduct research for two years with a UF faculty member in any department, with a focus on ecology or environmental science. The fellowship aims to advance both the scope and depth of science and the research credentials of both fellow and faculty member, in a partnership that builds on the strengths of both. Evidence of joint development of the research proposal is key.

Dr. Bhaskaran works at the intersection of urban ecology and social science to unearth the human dimensions and impact of urban green spaces in rapidly urbanizing tropical cities.

Dr. Giroux blends animal physiology, movement ecology, and landscape ecology to inform biodiversity conservation in light of how climate and land-use change impacts wildlife.

Dr. Cosset works at the intersection of community ecology, movement ecology, and landscape ecology to investigate how species move and persist across landscapes.

Dr. Brown’s research explores species interactions and how host-microbial systems respond to stress to inform conservation decisions.

Dr. Ariana Corrales Osorio · 2016-2018
Dr. Corrales Osorio studies how the ecology and evolution of ectomycorrhizal communities associated with tropical tree species influence tropical forest ecosystems.
The Ewel Fellowship provides a yearly stipend of $70,000, plus a yearly allowance of $20,000 for health insurance, research support, professional development, and travel.
- You ought to have earned your PhD degree within the two years before the start of the fellowship cycle.
- Your doctorate (or equivalent) can be in any field, provided you propose research related to tropical or subtropical ecology and the environment.
- You must secure a commitment letter from at least one UF faculty member who agrees to serve as mentor. The UF sponsor’s expertise ought to provide significant opportunity to broaden the applicant’s research expertise.
- You must be proficient in spoken and written English.
- Citizens of any country may apply.
- Only individuals may apply.
- If you are chosen as a Ewel Fellow, you ought to be prepared to commit to work at UF for the full two years. The fellowship requires residency at UF for a least half of the two-year period — 12 months (though not necessarily consecutively).
- Your prior academic and professional success and your potential contributions to scholarship.
- A UF faculty member’s commitment and tangible support for you and your proposed research project.
- The originality of your proposed research.
- The relevance of your research question to the tropics or subtropics.
(Research that is narrowly focused taxonomically, of site-specific applicability, or primarily focused on technique or methodology is discouraged.)

- A research proposal.
- A letter of support from your UF faculty mentor.
