Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition

Purpose

The CFGS 2026 Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition challenges graduate students to present their research in three minutes or less while using one static slide in a way that is clear, concise, and engaging for a non-specialist audience. After reading this webpage, click here to sign up!

Eligibility

  • Participants must be currently enrolled graduate students.
  • Presentations must be based on the student’s own research.

Time Limit

  • Presentations must not exceed three minutes.
  • Presentations are timed from when presenters start their presentation through either movement or speech.
  • Exceeding the time limit results in disqualification.

Slide Requirements

  • One static PowerPoint slide only (no animations, transitions, videos, or audio).
  • The slide’s ratio must be 16:9.
  • No props or additional materials are allowed.

Presentation Style Requirements

  • Spoken word only — no poems, songs, or raps.
  • No additional electronic media (sound or video files, for example) or costumes.
  • No reading from notes or scripts.

Language Requirement

  • Presentations must be in English

Judging

  • The decision of the judges panel is final.
