Postdoc Classifications
UF has two postdoc appointment types: Postdoctoral Associate and Postdoctoral Fellow.
Postdoctoral Associates
UF postdoctoral associates may be appointed for up to four years. Appointment beyond those four years requires approval of the Associate Provost and Dean of the Graduate School. Associates are considered temporary employees (OPS) and may be eligible for UF employee benefits.
At the end of the initial appointment, postdoctoral associates may choose to...
- Leave UF or take a regular position.
- Apply for an extension of the postdoctoral position in the same laboratory (for a maximum of two more years with thorough justification). Click this link for more details: Postdoc Extensions.
- Apply to study in a different UF laboratory in order to gain additional skills (for a maximum of two additional years).
At the end of six years maximum, there will be no further extensions of a postdoctoral appointment. Any subsequent UF employment must be through a normal search process for a regular position.
Postdoctoral Fellows
Fellowships are awarded to aid the postdoctoral fellow in the pursuit of study or research, with no services expected. Postdoctoral fellows are not considered UF employees and are not eligible for UF employee benefits.
